● About

the practice of a dyeing art form

It started with seeking a better technique for dyeing garments. Then, larger. And larger. And larger. And larger fabrics.

Finding the work of artist Anna Joyce, and her book, ‘Hand Dyed: A Modern Guide to Dyeing in Brilliant Color for You and Your Home’. Todd Alexander found a portal into converging these practical approaches to everyday materials, with the rigor of his undergrad studies in Exercise Science to find points of structure and fluidity.

Building on this, Todd expanded his experiences in dyeing piece garments into large scale textile artworks, stretching and manipulating literal canvas into explosions of abstraction in the scientific spirit of Dawn Ng and the audacious free-forms of Sam Gilliam, creating worlds of frozen smoke and phantom color to see, fall into, and become lost within.

in creating works, I feel very much like Q-Tip’s description of ‘The Low End Theory’ : “…an orchestrated and free-flowing collision of voices, which embodies the heart of jazz.”
